Choosing a Registry Cleaner

Posted on 08 July 2009 by John Edward

There are a number of different options available when choosing a registry cleaning program, just as there are for other PC optimization programs.

You might be searching for a free registry repair program or may be willing to spend some money on it, but either way you should know what to look for in order to choose a program that really works.

The purpose of this article is to outline the bare-bone features of any registry cleaning program that you are thinking of using.

Some of the registry cleaners on the market only clean the “empty” registry files. However, some of the major culprits than cause overall instability, pop-up messages, and registry related errors are caused by “invalid” entries in the registry.

A registry entry, in some cases, contains the location of important files on your computer; files that certain applications need in order to function properly. If a registry cleaner manages to clean out the empty entries, yet leaves the invalid entries intact – that can affect your computer’s performance significantly.

There is no registry cleaner that works perfectly 100% of the time, even if the absolute best software has been purchased. This is not usually the fault of the program. It is usually caused by a corrupt registry or having installed or uninstalled a program that was poorly written at some point in the past.

In the event that a registry cleaning causes problems with a certain application after-the-fact, you need a way to restore the registry to its previous state so that you can regain functionality with that application or applications. For this reason, it is vitally important that your registry cleaning program of choice offers registry backups as a part of the cleaning process.

Cleaning a registry is a lot like brain surgery in a way – it’s very finicky. Because even computer pros backup their registry before making any changes, this should tell you that computer novices should be even more vigilant to create a backup before any changes are made to their computer’s registry.

Keep in mind that this is a very short list of registry repair software features. Only the absolute basics where covered. There are additional features available with different registry repair programs that can be used to improve the security of the program as well as features that make its use very convenient. When you are searching for an efficient registry repair program, make sure you choose one that includes the two features discussed here. If you overlook these recommendations you will be wasting your time and also run the risk of setting yourself up for really big problems down the road.

Is It Safe To Use Registry Cleaners?

Posted on 26 June 2009 by John Edward

As somebody who probably hopes to keep their PC running in tip-top condition for a while, you’re rightly concerned about whether registry cleaning utilities are safe to use. While you know enough to know that your Window’s registry is vitally important to your computer – that’s probably the extent of your knowledge in this area.

Fortunately that’s perfectly fine, because most registry cleaning tools are made for people that don’t know much about it. There may be some risks however, and we will do our best to educate you on those. As far as registry cleaners go, there are two main risks that you need to be concerned with:

1. Downloading and installing a malware-infected registry cleaning tool

2. Using a registry cleaner that does not offer registry backups before the cleaning, or repair, process

And, the good news here is that you are fully able to avoid using these types of applications.

Registry Cleaners Infected with Malware

In the majority of cases, malware-infected registry cleaners present themselves through so-called “scareware” advertising tactics. If you’ve been using the internet for a while, you’ve probably already encountered these less-than-ethical advertisements.

These ads are generally very persistent – they’ll take over your browser, try to force a download, or flash a page to you that states your registry is corrupted, you have traces of illegal activity on your PC, or similar wording. In other words, “scareware” – the company plays the fear card in order to get you to download and install their software.

It’s not a proven fact that all scareware has a malware infestation, but odds are that whatever you download will if you get your registry cleaners from scareware advertisements.

In order to stop this it would be best to get registry cleaning utilities from certified websites, and not websites that try to scare you into making a download. If you do this you have a way of knowing every single thing that has been downloaded, and that really works in your favor. You also need to look closely at their website and see how well it is designed. A properly designed website usually indicates a well made product.

Registry Cleaning Tools Without a Backup Option

Your Window’s registry is undeniably sensitive, and it literally controls your entire Windows-based computer system. Because registry cleaning software cannot plan for every anomaly in your computer’s registry – there is a minute chance that a registry cleaning will weigh unfavorably with a certain application at one point in time. This is actually very rare, at least amongst professional registry-cleaning products, but it’s something that could happen, nonetheless.

If the registry-repair tool that you are considering does not have an easy-to-use registry backup option – do not download, buy, test, or use that software. Too much is at stake to use a less-than-adequate registry cleaning utility. All professional registry cleaning applications include backup options, so if you choose a reputable vendor – you don’t have anything to worry about in this regard.

The risks associated with registry cleaning are pretty low as long as you pay attention. Don’t download anything that originates from the scareware ads and make sure that you don’t use any type of cleaner that doesn’t have a backup option.

By using this advice you’ll have the ability to choose a registry cleaner that will take good care of your machine.
