Once you got it.

Most of the time it is easy to know when you have been infected. If you have pop ups on your computer instructing you to buy or click on naughty pics its infected. Another sign is when the speed of your PC has slowed down drastically. If none of the programs you have are working properly and keep closing out, is another one. Viruses could also give you stop error screens and keep closing out.

The clean up process.

First boot to safe mode. Its faster and easier to work here. You need to remove all cookies and cache. Its good to use a type of clean up scan. Do not forget to remove all the temp Internet files and prefetch files. Find the prefetch folder by typing the word into the run box.

Unwanted files and programs.

In the add/remove list located in the control panel, uninstall other programs. Sometimes the virus comes in on a program that was installed. This is another trick to help free up hard drive space and will help your computer run faster. When uninstalling old programs, unused registry entries will be removed.

Run an anti-virus scan.

Secondly run a good anti-virus scan. This will work better in safe mode too. At this time leave the computer running only the scan. It will use less resources and get rid of all viruses. Once the scan is finished use the given button to quarantine all files.

My browser was hijacked.

If the browser is hijacked run a hijack or Trojan remover. SmitFraudFix is a great tool used for removing Trojans and hijackers. Once that is finished reset the browser settings and uninstall extra and unneeded toolbars and pop-up blockers. Too many programs will cancel one another out and not work.

Still have issues?

It may be best for advanced users only to try this part. If the virus is still present you can do a search for it in the windows registry. It will pull up broken or not found links. It is good to remove them here. You can do a search for these files within the hard drive and remove them also. Sift through the msconfig start up files and uncheck items not needed.

Protect yourself.

An anti-virus or firewall is somewhat required for a computer to connect to the internet. So many people are out to get your personal data and you need to protect yourself.
