Wordpress out of the box provides fundamental management of the fundamental SEO meta data. To extend the functionality we add our own super-charged version of the All-In-One-SEO Pack. The SEO pack makes it easy to alter the page title and page meta description.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack is a great WordPress plugin that completes the SEO aspects for WordPress. For some unknown reason WordPress still has not got the SEO fixed out of the box.

The All-In-One-SEO Pack allows you you to change the most significant page elements – page title and page description. It also allows you to modify the page keywords, but as we all know, search engines no longer take note of these because they have been spammed too much in the past. Google finished using the keywords for page ranking in the early 2000’s.

Page Title HTML tags

This is the No1 SEO component to manipulate. Constantly make sure that you control the page title. The page title appears in the browser window at the very top of the screen. Search engines use this in the listings and show it in their search results.

Always try to make the page title only carry the keywords you want the page to rank for. Try to limit them to 2 or 3 maximum.

The page title is the MOST significant SEO page element because it is like the title of a book. And just like a book title, if it is good it will be more engaging to readers.

If your page needs to extend to cover two or three keywords we have found that you can still get good rankings from adding multiple keywords to the title. But do remember that the closer the page title is to the keyword you want to rank for the better.

Even though it is best to keep the page title just to the keywords you want to rank for, if you are a branded business you will also most likely need to add in your business name so that it is displayed on Google in your search listing.

Page Descriptions

This element is NOT used by search engines for ranking purposes. Nevertheless, most search engines will use this in their search results so it is important. We have discovered that Google will use the description most of the time. We have not yet discovered how it resolves if to use it or not. The rest of the time it will pick up the first piece of text on the page.

By having a good description it will increase your click through rates because the text will be more appealing to people. Ensure that you use a maximum of 156 characters. If you use any more characters Google will truncate the rest. If you can keep your descriptions to–0 characters or less this is even better seeing Google sometimes adds a date to the beginning of the description which is part of the 156 characters it displays.

At the bottom of every page and post you will find the meta tags plugin details. Update the details appropriately. Note: If you can only use see the title for the plugin and no details, just click the title and the section will expand.

A Collaborative Link Campaign

If you’ve never worked for a client who also has other people doing the same thing you do, just waityou will. For particularly large or especially competitive link campaigns, it has become more commonplace for a company to try various options, sometimes all at once.

It may not be something that you’re comfortable doing, for whatever reason. If you have expectations in place (such as open communication and honesty) then you may find it difficult to deal with this situation if you’re not “allowed” to speak to other parties.

In some cases, you won’t have a clue that others are working on the same campaign, for example. If this isn’t something you can handle, don’t get involved. If you are involved and then find out after the fact, just do your best to work around it, or, if you feel that you have to, lose the client.

If you have a particularly strong belief in link building without going against Google’s guidelines, for example, you may find yourself working on a campaign that’s also employing people who are buying links. You could be buying links and doing it in what you think is a very low-risk and natural manner, and then discover someone else working on the campaign who is blatantly buying horribly spammy ones that are risky and exceptionally obvious.

The odds of two or more entities working on one campaign and having the exact same mentality about what is and isn’t ok are very low, of course. My guess is that if this situation does arise for you, you’ll find that determining that the good that you think you’re doing may be negated.

Quality is better than quantity and choosing who links to you is just as important as how many link to you. For example, say you sell landscaping and gardening supplies. Having a link placed on a web site for patios or home improvements will bring in traffic that is more likely to be interested in purchasing your product, than traffic that comes from a computer web site or a general links page.

Links pointing to your site from other popular sites can indicate that your site is of better quality and deserves higher ranking. That is, a handful of good quality links, with some engines, is better than 100 links from sites that are not popular.

For example, if one team is doing a big content release and you’re working on emailing and asking for links, time it so that you’re pointing to their new content. For large campaigns, you can move faster if there are more hands on deck. If you can work together, you benefit from bouncing ideas off each other. There can be several different types of link building going on at once (content writing, social media promotions, emailed link requests, etc.)

You should also watch out for any link pages that are generated dynamically. Chances are that such pages would not get indexed soon enough, which means that a link from such a page would not benefit you. Some dynamic link pages are intentionally generated in such a way so as to prevent them from getting indexed. Some unscrupulous webmasters do this to trick you to prevent any Page Rank leaking from their site to yours. Links from such pages therefore do not give you any benefit. Examples of dynamic links include URLs containing symbols such as “?” or “&”.

There are two types of SEO, onsite and offsite. Onsite involves optimizing your website to make it search engine friendly. By changing your local site and adding special SEO components you can attract better results, and sometimes great results from search engines like Google.

You can get great results with just onsite optimization on its own but the results tend to be unstable and not effective continuing. To get top results you will need to do a lot off offsite optimization as well.

Top onsite SEO tip: change the page title

Believe it or not the changing the page title is one of the most important onsite optimization techniques you can do. The page title is what appears at the top of a browser on the left hand side. Visitors to your site will not usually take much notice of your page title because it is not rendered on your page. However, search engines take a lot of notice of the page title.

If you have never seen what a <title?</title? tag looks like within an HTML page then simple open up the page source and take a look at the top of the page. To view the page souce, the easiest way is to right click on the page and select view source.

You will find the page title within the <title?</title? tags usually within the first few lines of the HTML code. This is an example of an HTML title tag : <title?This is my page title</title?.

Search engines are very focused on page titles because it is like the title of a book – it tells you what is inside. By paying close attention to the page title you can move your ranking up considerably. The other day we could not get a client to rank for a specific keyword – we had missed adding this into the title (we are ranking clients for many keywords) and then the next day after we got the page reindexed by Google they moved from the second page to the first.

The trick is not to dilute your page title with additional non-keywords. Do not add words like in and the, and other filler words. The closer you can get to the pure keywords the better.

For example, avoid doing this: <title?Earth Worms in the Middle East</title? when your keyword is earth worms. Alternatively simply use: <title?Earth Worms</title?.

If you have multiple keywords only use 2 or three uttermost or again the focus is reduced. If you are using multiple keywords then do it like this: <title?Earth worms | Middle East</title? – never use filler words like ‘in’ and ‘the’.
